DIY Fall Pine cone Sunflower Wreath Tutorial

Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1 - Gather some pine cones:

Make sure you have enough pine cones. My wreath was 16in in diameter, and I used about 28 pine cones . You can adjust the number based on the size of the pine cones, but use a variety of sizes so it looks balanced.

You'll want to make sure that you prepare your pine cones appropriately, so they don't bring little critters into your home or rot and end up stinking up your house! There's a great tutorial over at "Bren Did" that shows you how to do this without bleach so that you don't bring any noxious chemicals into your home either.

Once the pine cones are dried out, cleaned and prepared for crafts you'll want to cut off the tops of the pine cones so that you have a somewhat flat surface. You can use a pruning shears, sharp scissors or wire-cutter to accomplish this (see video below).

Once the pine cones are cut, grab some tweezers or a needle-nose pliers and pluck out the little wispy, paper like seeds called the "wing" in between each layer of the scales. Did you know they were called that? I learned something new too! They come out easily, but you shouldn't paint over them.

Now you're ready to paint!

Step 2 - Paint the Pine Cones:

Depending on your patience level choose to either hand paint or spray paint your pine cone scales. If you want more control over color, choose an acrylic-based paint and use a craft paint brush to paint each pine cone scale. You don't have to paint all the layers of scales. The top 3 or 4 usually do the trick.

Alternatively, use spray paint if you find a color you like and save some time doing so. Put your pine cones out on some paper and go to town with the spray paint.

While the paint is drying, let's prepare your buttons.

Step 3 - Glitter those buttons:

Grab a variety of sizes of black buttons and spray them with spray adhesive. I use 3M spray adhesive. After waiting for it to become tacky, sprinkle some black glitter on each button and then press down with your finger to make sure the glitter sticks.

Once the buttons and pine cones are dry, use a hot glue gun to attach the button to the center of each pine cone. Given the size of the pine cone, this may or may not take more glue.

Step 4 - Attach the pine cones:

Now it's time to attach the pine cones to the wreath. Find a grapevine wreath at any craft store, Amazon or even the dollar store. Again, I just use hot glue, but make sure to glue the pine cones on in several places to keep them firmly attached.

Step 5 - Add Leaves:

I picked up a pick of artificial leaves at the craft store. I chose ones that looks a little bit like real sunflower leaves, however and you can choose any that you like. Cut the stems and use your glue gun to fill in the holes and the sides of your wreath with your greenery. .

Step 6 - Hang your wreath!

Find some ribbon that you love, attach it to the back and hang your wreath for all to enjoy. If you're hanging your wreath outside, feel free to spray the entire thing with acrylic spray to keep it safe from the elements.

And that's it! See? That was super easy, fun and now you have a wreath that no one else can buy at the local store. Bonus! You used a natural element and likely kept it from the trash.

Show it off!
